Choon Choosday: Moby – Go (Woodtick Mix)
After last week’s pause, we are back on course with the “Bands I Can’t Stand” series. This week, it’s Moby. I like Moby’s early stuff (like this one), he was underground, electronic, alternative and sometimes challenging – his track Thousand for example ramps up to 1000bpm. Good work Mr Hall. But then in the late nineties he decided to start making dreary coffee-table music, the sort of bilge that appears on albums called things liked “Mellow Moods” or “Chilled Ibiza 5″. The album Play was the worst offender, and during the next year you couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing his tracks on an advert. Everyone has to earn a living, and an ad here and there is ok, but it was constant, and what I objected to most was his stuff being licensed to car ads when he claimed to be eco-aware. Cars kill the planet Richard, don’t be telling the world to drive more of them. I’m a vegetarian, I wouldn’t let any ads for my work be associated with meat products or slaughter houses, thank you very much.
Having said all that, GO is an all-time classic. Chilled with a hint of techno and if you look deep enough there is a faint jungle tinge to it aswell. All in all (and i think Paula will agree with me here) this is an epic
