Here come the nerves

28 April, 2012

The whole season relies on today, the final game. We have been first or second in the division since the first day, but I have spent nine months telling myself we won’t be promoted, preparing for the disappointment.

Unusually, I haven’t thought about football all week, but now as i put on my red and white, the meaning of today is creeping up on me. I watch the clock countdown – I have to leave the flat in ten minutes to walk to the pub and meet the others for pre-match beers – knowing that today IS the season. Win, and we are back in the Premier League. Lose, and we (probably) slip into lottery of the Playoffs, where we know we will fail.

Yes yes, people say it’s just a game. But at half twelve today, nothing else in the world will matter to me other than the ninety minutes that follow. COYR.
