Focussed

25 June, 2012

I sat down at 7pm tonight, switched on Skream and Benga, and set to work on chapter 10. It’s now nearly 10.30 and apart from a pause halfway through to fetch a drink, i worked straight through. The first draft of the second version of chapter 10 is done, and totals just under 3k words. Much of this was copied from the previous version of the chapter or elsewhere, but about a quarter of it was new stuff, and all of it needed to be read, considered and then binned, kept, or improved.

I am now 26k words into the second draft. The first draft reached 96k (about two thirds of the way through the whole project) before i decided to re-work it, and the 96k will reduce to about 60k in the rewrite. Then i can plough on to the end, and ultimately produce a work of around 100k words. If i can keep up the rate of 3k words a day I will be on the new stuff in a couple of weeks, but there is no way i will keep this pace up. It is very satisfying to produce a decent chunk in one sitting though, especially as i wasn’t distracted. I was focussed.

This is where the magic happens:

Yes, that is my netbook, set up on a shelf i got in a B&Q sale, laid on an old sofa cushion which is on my lap – a luxurious setting. When i’m rich and famous that sofa cushion will be worth millions. Those are the airlocks of my winery in the background – it’s not a large flat. When i’m rich and famous, my wines will sell for millions, especially the plum variety.

Right then, time I switched off and headed off to bed for a read before sleepy-byes. I’m sure i’ll be back to check my stats a few times during the night, so i’ll see you then.

  1. Do u ever have to avoid outside stimuli? I find that a movie or television program can sometimes sneak into a chapter. Sometimes I don’t catch it until I start editing the chapter.

    • I usually write with music on, preferably something without lyrics otherwise i would listen to that and the words would get in the way. so the tv would be faaaaar to distracting!

Plum wine? Now I’m curious. Happy writing. 🙂
