Podcasts

12 December, 2012

I read Paula’s post today about background listening and she mentioned podcasts, in particular World Book Club from the BBC. I’ve mentioned before how I love the BBC, and amongst many other things I love its commitment to speech broadcasting, the majority of which is available in podcast form. There are two programmes I really enjoy, both from the World Service so they are available to international listeners.

Outlook is broadcast four days a week, each programme runs for half an hour. It features the real life experiences of ordinary people from around the world who have far from ordinary stories to tell. Sometimes moving, sometimes hilarious, sometimes fascinating, it is a must listen for writers like us who have an interest in human nature.

Witness is broadcast five days a week, each programme a short ten minute documentary. Witness takes an event from history which happened on that date, and invites somebody who was there to relate their memories or their view. Again, it elicits a variety of emotions depending on the subject, but it gives a unique human perspective on historic events.

Or if neither of these are to your taste, wander around the BBC podcast pages and you will very soon find a programme that is. Since I am a licence fee and tax payer, I fund the BBC. If you are listening from abroad, you can listen for free. So think of it as my gift to you!
