Choon Choosday: Madness – One Step Beyond

I love Madness. I’m not sure how well-known they are in the States, especially their early stuff, but they were my favourite group growing up and they still get me dancing now. They have reggae/ska influence but they are essentially a pop act whose songwriting abilities and sense of humour fit on an English music continuum that stretches forwards via Blur to Lilly Allen and Dizzy Rascal, and backwards through Slade and The Kinks, past Noel Coward and to Music Hall. This was their second single, a cover of a Prince Buster ska hit of the 60s, and the title track of their first album. The video is taken from the Complete Madness compilation and is preceded by the legendary a capella version with Lee’s epic vocal. There isn’t anyone of that era that can’t join in with Carl’s intro, and there isn’t anyone who will deny that this is a
