Choon Choosday: Coldplay – Spies

Coldplay. Ach mein Gott they are a dreary, lowestcommondemoninator, Radio2-friendly, Dad-rock, prepackagedadvertmusic excuse for a band. Seriously, were they grown on a farm owned by a record label that wanted a combo that would appeal to people who think Radio 6 Music is a bit too racey and that jeans, browns shoes and a corduroy jacket is a fair enough look to wear out and about socially and to wedding receptions?

Yep, I hate Coldplay. But in a further entry in my new season of quality works by bands I can’t stand, I offer you Spies. Some nice chord changes in there, interesting guitar effects, a classic quiet-loud-quiet progression, and an off-kilter drum beat that is vaguely reminiscent of “A Day In The Life” by The Beatles (itself one of the greatest drumming perfomances ever) in that it doesnt sit in the background but is happy to poke and prod you. Goodness me, the ‘Play have written themselves a

  1. I hate Coldplay too, but I really love A Day In The Life, especially this version by Jeff Beck, oh, and also the Beatles version 😉
