I have changed the English language

30 October, 2013

There is a little-known English playwright who lived and wrote in the 17th Century called William Shakespeare. You may not have heard of him but apparently his works were very popular in his day and he was also a contemporary of Christopher Marlowe. Yes, THAT Christopher Marlowe. Anyway, this Shakespeare person has been credited with inventing thousands of English words which are now in common use. Well, William Shakespeare, I’ve got you in my sights.

The word/sound “yum” is a universally employed onomatopoeic expression of pleasure or delight, often referring to food. The word “yumsk” is slightly less widespread but means the same thing, and I have been using it for a few years since I heard Marcus Brigstocke using when playing Gilles Wemmbley-Hogg. But, dear reader, there is only one person out of the six billion or so on this planet that has given the word yumsk an unnecessarily Russian flavour by lengthening it to “Yumskova!” And that one person is this correspondent, The Reclining Gentleman.

I know this because while bored at work today, I mused on the word “yumskova” and wondered where I had heard it and picked it up from. So I googled it and got the following result:

yumskova

That’s right, people, I am officially the only person who has ever used this word online. I have invented it, and in the future when it is used worldwide and the OED need to research its origins to use as a footnote when it finds its way into the updated edition, they will be directed to this very blog.

Language is a fluid, organic concept which is constantly growing and morphing. And I can claim to have grown and morphed it by one more word.
