Choon Choosday: Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke

21 January, 2014

After I pulled a bit of Ellington from the box last week, how could I not follow up with Stevie Wonder’s timeless jazz-legend-tribute classic Sir Duke. This truly is one of the all-time greats, and I found this live performance as a special treat for you all as you’ve been good.

You can deconstrust this tune and find that every part in it is top drawer – the drumming, the bass, the guitar, the piano, and of course Stevie’s unique voice, dripping with soul. The standout in this choon of all choons though has to be the horn section. If I’d kept up the trumpet lessons I did at school, and there was such a thing as trumpetoke, THIS is what I would get up and do whenever I was a few drinks into the evening. Stevie gives them parts that any sax or trumpet player would kill for, and they are clearly loving playing with the man himself. And the pinnacle is that horn break in the middle, which is followed along the bass and the piano.

An epic moment in music history and no one could deny this the title of

  1. Wow! Talk about flashbacks! I had this album, yes album/record/LP/vinyl recording 😀
Used to play it allllllllllll the time, whenever I hear this song it brings me right back to the days of skipping school and hopping in my GBFF’s car blasting this song on the way to NYC (he had $$$ back then so he had a brand new car with a kick-ass stereo- cassette lol) plus going to the Gallery in NYC and dancing like crazy whenever this song came on- even now as I listen to it, I can’t sit still 😀
    Love it! Great choon-choice 😉

    • I thought you might like this one 🙂 I’ve never actually owned it so i’m jealous of you having the original vinyl – and i don’t doubt it has had a few playings over the years!
