Friday Fictioneers – Lights

7 February, 2014

Friday thanks to Rochelle for providing us a with a prompt and a huge dollop of encouragement every week. Yes, it’s Frific – pre-weekend bitesize chunks of flash fiction. Here is this week’s prompt pic:

and here are my 100 words. A bit darker than I expected them to be, but we can only go where the muse sends us:

It was her that saved me. Her and The Smiths. When we felt most lost, most confused, we would lay in the darkness listening to The Queen Is Dead, our fingers intertwining in chaste mutual support as Morrissey sang There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.

Until one night when her light did go out, extinguished that fateful night when she lost her strength. One year on, then two years on, and every year since, I bought a lamp in her memory. She showed me a light she could never find for herself. A light that never goes out.

And while you’re here in my little corner of the net, why not pop over and read this post to find out how YOU can be part of the next Fiction Relay…

  1. Great story, and equally great music, from a long time Smiths fan 😉

  2. I like the music! And the dark but also loving tone to this story. 🙂
