Choon Choosday: Lemon Jelly – Soft

Sampling has come on a jiminy heck of a long way in the last forty years. In the mid-70s of course it took the form of a New York sound system DJ switching between two turntables, then sequencers and PCs came along to make the whole job that much simpler. Some artists take a sample and do nothing more than loop it unaltered; some use it, play about with it till it’s unrecognisable and then stick it in a tune where no one will ever spot it.

This choon is somewhere between the two. It starts off sampling on short vocal phrase, brings in a bit more of the backing, then becomes more of a remix or even homage. Some might say by the end they are just playing someone else’s record and claiming the credit. Whatever your view, the mellow head-nodding this inspires, the choice of one of the cheesiest 70s ballads ever, and the seemingly unconnected but totally appropriate speech sample makes this, without argument, a
