First world problems

10 August, 2014

My laptop died on Friday. I was editing notes for the newly-resurrected WIP I was working on when the screen froze. I switched it off and on again, but it won’t go any further than the Windows welcome screen. I tried reloading Windows, but for some reason that doesn’t work. So I am laptop-less.

Everything was backed up so luckily I haven’t lost any files, apart from the notes I was updating when it went. Well I say “luckily” but it’s not luck, it’s a reward for all those times I have carefully and deliberately made copies of everything on two different USB drives and my home PC. Feel free to use this lesson and learn from it.

So I now need a new laptop, and I can’t afford the £200-ish because I am about to go on holiday. And in the mean time I have to write on my old PC which is slow and clunky. But I recognise that what I am saying is that I still have a working computer and I have a holiday coming up which I have been dreaming of for 20 years. So I am disappointed but not for a moment have I been angry or upset.

Perspective is everything.

  1. Excellent lesson in having files backed up! But I still feel your pain — or at least your minor discomfort. Have you tried calling tech support or taking it to a nerd doc shop? (Lots cheaper than buying a new one.) Have fun on your trip, TRG! 🙂

  2. Putting things in perspective is definitely important at a time like this. And you’ve just reminded me I need to back-up – thank you.

  3. I am excited for you on your upcoming trip to Iceland. It will be fun to read your posts and learn about this mysterious and interesting country.

Kudos to the ‘new trg’… not long ago you would have had a meltdown.
