Choon Choosday: The Stone Roses – Waterfall / Don’t Stop

30 December, 2014

There is multilevelled genius going on in this track.

Firstly, Waterfall itself is one of the greatest songs of all time. It features on The Roses’ eponymous debut, widely regarded as the best debut ever.

Secondly, Don’t Stop is a backwards version of it. It’s not just the track backwards, it’s a rebuilding of it, but it’s essentially the same tune played in reverse. And the result also stands as a fine tune in its own right. If you listen to either song backwards in fact, you will clearly hear the alternative song forwards. And yes, those lyrics – sung forwards on both versions – match. I don’t understand how “she’ll carry on through it all, she’s a waterfall” reverses as “don’t stop, isn’t it funny how you shine”. I see the words written down, i say them, i hear them, but I can’t make the connection. I can’t even see where the consonant and vowel sounds match. But they do.

And then the third dimension kicks in. They play Don’t Stop – the backwards looped remix of a forwards song – forwards live.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Stone Roses…
