Choon Choosday: Tom Waits – Table Top Joe

I was surprised, on searching through my posts, that I haven’t linked any Tom Waits on a Choosday before. I wouldn’t say I know his catalogue that well, but I love that 3-am, cigarettes and alcohol style of his. I am well aware that some can’t get past his growly voice and the sometimes discordant melodies and backing, but I admire the way he does what he does whatever anyone might think. And if you take the time to listen, he is a fine songwriter and lyricist.

This is a mostly-true tale of Johnny Eck. I love singing along with this in the car but can’t get more than a couple of verses in before my throat give out. It’s a toe-tapper, it’s got a wonderful piano line, and it’s a bit sad too. What else would you need from a
