Choon Choosday: Madness – ERNIE

If you want to place a bet, perhaps in response to Ray Winstone’s ubiquitous demands that you “bet in play naahhhhh!”, the facility to do so is a mere thumb away on your phone app. In the old days, you had three options: 1) Go through the plastic rainbow strip curtain into the mystique of a betting shop, 2) do the football pools or 3) buy premium bonds. They were a government-run savings scheme and ERNIE selected winning bonds at random every week –  it could be you.

Madness wrote a song about ERNIE. I love the cockney upright piano in this, the hammond organ underneath, the brilliantly jaunty rhythm, but mostly it’s the way Madness have a Kinks-like habit of singing about real life and the world around them.
