Friday Fictioneers – Gap Year

10 April, 2015

If it’s Friday – and it is – it must be time to post this week’s Friday Fiction – so I have. Every week the legendary Rochelle posts a prompt pic that literally trillions of writers then use as inspiration for 100 words of fiction. This week’s picture of the week this week is this picture this week:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and having looked at it, chewed on the end of my metaphorical creative pencil and failed to come up with anything I then phoned 100 zoos and asked 100 keepers to give a dictionary to 100 monkeys, and for those 100 monkeys to randomly point at one word each. I then typed those 100 words into Word, in the exact order of pointing. And whaddayaknow, they kind of fit together as a story. What are the chances of that? Pretty remote I’d have said. And I didn’t even know Facebook was in the dictionary. Anyway, courtesy of the monkeys, here are the words:

I don’t know how many times Kenny has read On The Road, when he finishes it he turns back the beginning and starts again. He even wanted to spend his gap year travelling across America, hitching lifts in goods yards, jumping from freight wagon to freight wagon. Of course we warned him against it but he’s an adult, he makes his own decisions.

For the first week we had regular texts and calls, followed the photos posted on Facebook. Until they stopped.

And then we saw the headline: “Terror Alert”. And the video of our son being tazered, handcuffed, detained.

  1. The monkeys done good here. 🙂 Nice one TRG.

  2. Obviously Kenny isn’t black, else he would have been tazered then shot in the back.
    Good piece.

  3. It’s a different world now..Nice one.

  4. Oops, a very bad way to find out about Kenny.

  5. Gee, I love that the monkeys pointed at the perfect words for a perfectly interesting story! Poor Kenny doesn’t look like he will make it home anytime soon. Nan

  6. Young men’s adventures aren’t what they used to be, sadly. It’s a bad world out there. Well written.
