Friday Fictioneers – Fire

17 April, 2015

It’s been a busy week this week, and I haven’t had as much time as usual to ponder Rochelle‘s email and the prompt pic it contained:fire-roger-bultot

Nor have I had time to contact the 100 monkeys this week, so the 100 words I’ve hurriedly thrown together are (a) all mine and (b) insufficiently reviewed. Apologies for these shortcomings, and I hope to be back to decent form next week.

Here is this week’s substandard effort:

Two days before the election, James joined the crowd at the fire station to hear Alan’s final speech.

“Vote for me tomorrow,” Alan continued, “I will cancel the closure of this Fire Station!” He waited as the cheers subsided. “We have all seen the recent pictures of house fires in Newbridge, Cornhill, Harbourton, Westcastle,” he continued “We need our fire services!” More applause.

James remembered the fires, the media coverage, but couldn’t recall a fire in Harbourton.

That night, television reports showed another house fire. Live reports. From Harbourton.

James wondered. Had Alan mis-spoken? Or had he spoken too soon?

  1. Ooh I like this. Very sneaky.

  2. Nice plot twist!

  3. Very clever.

  4. Clever one! (Monkeys or no monkeys…)

  5. Ah-hah. Funny premonition, that. Methinks someone helped with the arguments. Great story.

  6. Premonition or plot? You’ve got me wondering.

  7. Dear Relining Gentleman, I think it was a setup – and an accident! Thanks for stopping by! Nan

  8. Sorry about this – I am Dazed & Confused Nan 🙂

  9. Politics are so dark these days. Good story. 😄

  10. Sounds suspicious, but not enough so to do anything about it. Let’s hope Alan doesn’t want the position that bad. Good dialogue, RG. Well done. 🙂 — Suzanne

  11. A politician’s gotta do what a politician’s gotta do, I suppose. I like your response to the prompt. Well done.

  12. You had no business calling your effort substandard. This was great!
