Friday Fictioneers – Howler

7 August, 2015

As Jack Nicholson so very nearly said, “Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere’s Friday!” The axe of literary flash fiction smashes through the bathroom door that is your WP feed, bringing you works from all these writers, based on this prompt pic from Rochelle:

moon-and-sky1

I thought I would throw my authorly hat into the fictional ring this week, with my very own 100 words. I’m not in the habit of using recurring characters, but some might recognise the stars of this  week’s two-hander from a previous FriFic…

For the second time in two weeks, Oswald sat opposite Gerald.

“An email from Him,” Gerald said, “there’s been negative user feedback regarding a land creature. The ‘wolf’ malfunctions, it howls unpredictably.”

“It’s not malfunctioning,” Oswald said, relieved, “that’s a characteristic. Every creature reacts differently to fluctuations in the mood variable; the wolf howls. I coded that line myself – IF difference variable A545.2X4 THEN subroutine Howl.”

Gerald considered this brieely, then studied a database on his laptop. “I can see what’s happened. The Variable Mood is A545.2X3.”

“Yes, that’s what I meant.”

“No, you said A5452.2X4. That’s Variable Moon.”

  1. There’s always a pedant around, second-guessing. Nice one.

  2. Very clever. That’s why all manner of human and beast howl indiscriminately at the full moon. 😉

By the way, I caught a typo you might want to know about: “brieely.” “Briefly?”

  3. Good one ~ variable moon, variable howl, it all works out in the end.

  4. Two numbers wrong and all howl breaks loose!

  5. Heh, these programming errors really bite your ankles. Great story.

  6. Interesting POV. My ex’s youngest son writes code and talks like that all the time.
    I miss that boy.

  7. Ha ha nice one!

  8. I wonder what else might be due to coding errors. An good story – I like the characters.

  9. Very funny! Those glitches get everywhere.
