Choon Choosday : Burial – Street Halo

I’ve talked before about the qualities of a choon where you can separate out the parts and each one is on an incredibly high level of genius and musicianship, and this particular offering from Burial is a perfect example.He specialises in these dark, hypnotic electronic soundscapes which manage to fuse deep bass and rhythms with gorgeous floating vocals or voice samples.

He never fails to produce work of extraordinary quality and I could have chosen anything from his canon but I’ve gone for this because I love the video that accompanies it, a kind of post-modern animated Fritz Lang-style piece that was created separately but suits its mood perfectly.

Burial’s music was never intended to be listened to through shitty laptop or phone speakers so, if you can, listen through a decent hifi, ideally at night with all the lights off. Or, as I discovered some years back, play it through headphones whilst walking through a town late on a cold night when you are wrapped in a scarf and hat, and half close your eyes so that that passing headlights look like a slowed-down live version of Koyaanisqatsi.

But however you experience this, there is no question that Burial is a genius, and this is a
