Way back in my youth, a friend had a hiphop compilation LP that he taped me for and I played it constantly. This was the last track on the record and for me it was the higlight – even better than White Lines which opened it. Rap nowadayd has become a big business parody of itself with superstars rapping about guns n hos but banck then, this track brought me a tiny glimpse of what being poor and black in New York in the 70s/80s might have been. Real life brought to you by real people – in that sense it was the folk music of its day. Anyway, never mind my pretentious and ill-informed pseudo-babble, just play the

  1. This type of music reminds me of American TV programmes of the day more than the bands themselves and it put me off at the time. Fast car-chases, guns, macho-men, gangs.
    However I really see value with the post you have written to accompany it. In those days we assumed all Americans had an easy rich life.
