It ain’t nothin but a number

22 November, 2016

When I started blogging some five-ish years ago, I would religiously check my stats daily, count my likes and comments, desperate to see if I was making any kind of waves in the infinite ocean of world wide words. But now, I never do.

I’m not saying I don’t appreciate feedback that I get from around the world – because I do, and it’s always a pleasure to receive a nice comment – but I don’t obsess over if like I used to. And I’m genuinely not bothered whether anyone reads me or not, because I write for me and if anyone else likes it too or has something to say then that’s a bonus.

It’s like when I went to an open mic Flash Fiction night a few weeks back – I was a bit nervous but only because I was out in the world, socialising and potentially having to talk to People, which I’m not very good at. The actual standing up and reading bit didn’t bother me in the slightest. I imagined the crowd would be inviting and generous, and they were, but even if they had thrown bottles, my attitude would have been Fuck You, if you don’t like my writing then bollocks to you. Which is kind of healthy in a way.

Why am I telling you all this? No real reason, just that I actually looked at my stats just now and saw how many hits I get in a week. And I’ve already forgotten. Because it’s just a number, and I don’t care.
