Choon Choosday: Pete Wylie – Four Eleven Forty Four

13 December, 2016

Pete Wylie was best known as the singer in The Mighty Wah! who had a hit once called Story of the Blues. Then he went solo and has a hit once called Sinful. Off the album of the same name comes this little beauty, which I suddenly thought of for no reason the other day and discovered that I no longer have a copy of. Luckily for us all, there is the You Choob so that we can all enjoy it again.

Wylie was always very cagey about what this song means or who it is about, but it is clearly written from the heart – whether that heart was filled with love, hate, remorse, rage, longing, loss, I don’t know. I always assumed 4-11-44 was a date and couldn’t work out what happened during the last world war. His mother born perhaps? The subject of the song born? In these googlenabled days I can now see the numbers have been used to refer to lottery number picks which fits win with the mixed messages in the verses and suggests the chorus is the lady herself admitting she is a gamble.

Ultimately, only Wylie knows and he wasn’t saying back then. And probably isn’t famous enough anymore for anyone to be listening if he said now. So all we have is the song. And a classic it is too. A bit of 80s synth bass allied to a nice strumalong guitar, bit of mouth organ and a great vocal. What more could you ask for in a
