Choon Choosday: George Michael – Somebody to Love

27 December, 2016

So 2016 managed to pull another shock celebrity demise out of the bag before it was done. Nobody saw this one coming at all.

I can’t say I was a fan of George Michael, he just didn’t make records that I like, but I can totally understand why he was such a huge star. He had a great voice, immense star presence, and made the successful transition from teeny popstar to adult artist with his credibility not just intact but increased. He was also a major, brave, icon for the LGBT community, and stories of his anonymous charitable donations and acts fill the papers this week.

To be honest, I was never a fan of Queen either or this song. But this performance is a huge talent taking on a song that belongs to a genuine legend, a song that should never be touched or attempted by anyone else, yet he finds the perfect blend of paying tribute whilst owning the song for himself that a concert such as this required.

So RIP George and all the other dozens of famous people who passed in 2016. Let’s hope 2017 is kinder.
