Choon Choosday: Aretha Franklin – I Say A Little Prayer

Aretha annouced last week that she was going to release just one more album – a duet album with Stevie Wonder – and that would be it. She would draw a line under it and hang up the mic.

So in my own little corner of the interweb, I thought I’d pay tribute to the Queen of Soul. I could have chosen any one of so many great songs she has recorded over the years, but settled on this one. I love the subtle yet soulful piano and the perfect accompaniment of the backing vocals, both underpinning a perfect performance from a unique vocal talent. Quiet – loud – quiet wasn’t invented by Kurt Cobain you know, here is Aretha singing creamy smooth verses interspersed with choruses where she unleashes the raw tornado power of one of the greatest voices in twentieth century music.
