Choon Choosday: James Blake – If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead

6 February, 2018

I heard this on Thursday morning when I was listening to Benji B’s Radio 1 show from the night before and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. I’ve watched this YT vid countless times, linked it all over my social media, and now I’m sharing it with you.

I loved James Blake’s first album, his down-played electronica production and his haunting vocals were a truimph. And then I heard nothing more, although it seems there were two more albums after that which didn’t reach my ears.

This week though, he dropped this new piece and OMAFG it’s stunning. I know some people are having issues with the cut-up glitchy vocals and the Alvin Chipmunk autotuning but for me that’s what makes it such a beautiful tune. It’s as though his voice is so intertwined with the beats that he has crossed over from vocalist to beats. The video joins in too, it’s broken and blurred images perfectly mirror the vocal treatment. Oh, and a glorious reassuring lyric in the chorus. What’s not to love?

I know this isn’t for everyone but I hope you like it. I’m going to stick my neck out and say there won’t be a better track this year. It’s an absolute
