Choon Choosday: Robert Johnson – Stop Breaking Down

There is always much debate around which artists might be the most influential; The Beatles, The Stones, Elvis, Dylan, Bowie are the usual suspects. But when you trace modern popular music back through the years, it all funnels through Mississsippi and the Delta blues. And the most well-known songsmith of that time and that sound is Robert Johnson. Whether he really did sell his soul at the crossroads is unconfirmed, but what is true is that his guitar style, lyrics and vocals stand the test of time.

I’ve linked the White Stripes cover of this tune before, but here is the original. From a recording made before the outbreak of World War II, here is one of the all time greats, possibly the first ever
